Church on the Move Keeps Sound Consistent With A Complete Harman Solution For Its Newly Expanded Worship Center

Demonstrating the comprehensive range of audio solutions available from Harman Professional, North Carolina-based system designer Strategic Connections recently upgraded the sound system for the newly expanded Church on the Move in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The new sound reinforcement system features JBL loudspeakers, Crown amplifiers, and BSS processing.

Already the largest church in the region, the 12,000-member church chose to remodel its existing main sanctuary by adding an additional 700 seats.

At the heart of the new sound reinforcement system are 38 JBL VerTec® VT4888 midsize line array elements flown in four arrays with 16 JBL ASB6128V subwoofers, 10 flown and six located under the stage. For front fills, seven JBL AC28/95 loudspeakers are housed behind the perimeter of the stage. “The goal was to provide rock and roll style PA without filling the space with tons of speakers,” stated Brant Doell, system designer for Strategic Connections.

Doell said the decision to choose JBL was easy once the scope of the project became clear. “We did look at other vendors to start with until the number of boxes and racks were growing past our size limitations. JBL offers more for the dollar and size of their boxes than the competitors and they had all the gear in stock to ship that same week we ordered it.”

The system is powered by 49 Crown MA5000i amplifiers and 10 CTs 2000 and CTs 3000 amplifiers with control and routing handled by BSS Soundweb London BLU-160 processors, all networked via Harman HiQnet™ System Architect™. “Having the entire system on the network from one location allows us to handle troubleshooting sessions from our office to help insure the customer has the best support possible,” added Doell.

"The system sounds great and six months after the install was completed, no corrective equalization or system adjustments have been necessary. Pastor Willie George was excited that his voice could be heard clearly and dynamically throughout the room without hurting the front rows and Audio Director, Andrew Stone, has been quite pleased with the clarity, punch and consistency being delivered to every seat,” said Doell.

Audio Analysts Provides JBL VERTEC® Line Array System As Conan’s Comedy Tour Provides The Laughs

JBL VERTEC® line arrays are heading up the PA system on Conan O’Brien’s current “Legally Prohibited From Being Funny On Television Tour,” with Audio Analysts providing live sound reinforcement for the production. The 30-city tour kicked off on April 12 in Eugene, Oregon and will culminate June 14 in Atlanta, Georgia.

The live stage production is similar to a television variety show, with many elements from “Late Night With Conan O’Brien,” including sidekick Andy Richter and members of the show’s band. The tour also includes video bits, musical and comic performances and cameo appearances by celebrities, while O’Brien himself performs music throughout the production.

Before shipping out the VERTEC line arrays to Los Angeles for initial rehearsals, Audio Analysts fine-tuned the entire system at its headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colorado. “The reliable performance of the VERTEC line arrays enabled us to pre-design Conan’s touring system with confidence,” said Mario Leccese, VP of Operations for Audio Analysts. “As a longtime VERTEC owner, we are confident that we can achieve even coverage and controllable sound in any environment.”

The main PA system consists of 24 JBL VT4889 fullsize line array loudspeakers flown in left and right columns, 12 ground-stacked JBL VT4880 fullsize, arrayable subwoofers and four JBL VT4887 compact line array elements placed as front fills. Seventeen Crown I-Tech 4000 and 11 I-Tech 8000 amplifiers power the system, which is configured via Harman HiQnet™ System Architect™ software for remote control and monitoring.

AKG Supports Chelsea Academy’s Music Center through The Bryan Adams Foundation

AKG recently provided a complete set of microphones to support the Chelsea Academy, the recently opened secondary school in southwest London created to be an outstanding centre of education and creativity. Working with The Bryan Adams Foundation, AKG has donated a 6-piece drum microphone set and four C1000 S condenser mics to the Academy's Music Centre, which is designed to give students a thorough grounding in performance and recording techniques.

The Chelsea Academy is state-funded and part of the Government's Academies program to provide a broad education for children in local communities. It was established in September 2009 and is sponsored by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and the London Diocesan Board for Schools of the Church of England.

Academies are independent to allow flexibility, innovation and creativity in the curriculum, as well as in how they operate. To provide the best facilities for their students the schools rely on additional funding, sponsorship and donations.

The Bryan Adams Foundation has guaranteed to help support and finance the Music Centre at the Chelsea Academy. Founded by musician and photographer Bryan Adams in 2006 with the aim of "helping people help people", the Foundation has worked with leading pro audio and instrument manufacturers to provide equipment for the Academy's music department.

Soundcraft Vi1 – Smaller, Lower Priced, But Still With Vistonicstm, Lexicon FX, BSS EQ’s, And That Sound Quality

With the Soundcraft Vi Series now firmly established as a firm favourite digital desk on both the touring, broadcast and installed sound scenes, Soundcraft have taken this amazing platform to another, more affordable level with the release of the new Vi1 console.

Many users have asked for a smaller, lower-priced desk that still has the acclaimed VistonicsTM user interface, and of course the now-legendary optimal sound quality established with the Vi Series.

So here it is, the Soundcraft Vi1TM.

JBL Professional Bows Commercial Series Ceiling Speakers At InfoComm 2010

At InfoComm 2010, JBL Professional is introducing its new Commercial Series ceiling speakers, providing excellent performance for paging and background music applications, such as retail stores, restaurants, schools and other environments. These affordable ceiling speakers are designed to meet the requirements of UL1480 and UL2043 for use in plenum ceiling spaces.

The Commercial Series ceiling speakers feature high sensitivity, providing maximum sound level, even at low tap settings. The Series’ triple-voltage transformers (100V, 70V and 25V) fit with any distributed speaker system. The drivers all feature a full 1-inch (25 mm) diameter voice coil with a Kapton™ coil-former and high-temperature wire for better power dissipation and long-term reliability. NORTHRIDGE, California — In a highly advanced, yet-remarkably simple audio system design that points to the future of professional-grade integration, On Stage Audio (OSA) this month deployed the world’s first real-world test of the IEEE 802.1 AVB Bridging protocol. OSA’s team, led by Jim Risgin, Vice President, configured and controlled a Crown Audio, dbx, and BSS Audio A/V system using Harman HiQnet for the Compuware national sales meeting in Detroit, Michigan and ran audio using Ethernet AVB standards. The event, which took place at the Masonic Theater in downtown Detroit, allowed a crowd of 1,500 attendees to enjoy pristine digital audio and let the audio systems crew experience the future of A/V systems configuration, one in which everything works, all the time, and in which simplicity, not complexity, is the norm.

This watershed event marked the first time that AVB — the only standard transport protocol that allows time-synchronized, super-low-latency streaming audio and video over IEEE 802 Ethernet networks – was used as the primary audio transport for a major professional system. Harman is a leader in the AVB initiative, chairing and editing the IEEE P1722 Committee and editing the IEEE P802.1Qat Committee and the company is also a pioneer in AVB switching and product development, via the groundbreaking efforts of the Harman Corporate Technology Group and System Development and Integration Group (SDIG). Their dedication to the development of AVB is signified by their membership in the AVnu Alliance; the industry forum dedicated to promoting the adoption of the IEEE 802.1 AVB and related IEEE 1722 and IEEE 1733 standards over various networking link-layers for the advancement of professional quality audio video.

At the core of Risgin’s design are 24 Crown CTs 3000 power amplifiers fitted with USP4/AVB cards, four 24-port BSS Audio / NETGEAR AVB bridges as well as four dbx SC 32 Digital Matrix Processors which were used as the AVB “on ramps” for the system processing. The entire system (DSP and AVB) was controlled using Harman’s HiQnet protocol and System Architect software.

Jim Risgin, himself an early and active contributor to the AVB movement, assembled the Compuware AVB system working closely with SDIG. Using the intuitive and customizable HiQnet System Architect drag-and-drop design interface to design his system, Risgin configured and programmed the dbx SC 32 Digital Matrix Processor for processing and using the AVB network as the matrix automatically instructed groups of Ethernet AVB amplifier channels associated with each physical zone to switch to that networked audio signal.

The dbx SC 32’s were deployed as the ‘on ramps’ were used to convert the incoming analog audio to digital AVB streams. Fourteen audio streams were then routed via HiQnet System Architect to the 24 Crown CTs amplifiers with Crown USP4 4th generation DSP-based PIP™ (Programmable Input Processor) input modules connecting the amplifiers to the Ethernet network. This enabled real-time transport of digital audio via Ethernet AVB and also allowed the CTs amplifiers to be remotely controlled and monitored via HiQnet System Architect.

“The systems performed flawlessly,” says Risgin, who notes that AVB-induced latency was less than 500 microseconds for all devices, and that delay from input to output maintained the <2ms specified by the AVB protocol. “Harman has done a wonderful job of making a complex process far more simple,” he states. “Everything on the network was completely transparent – troubleshooting was simple because we were able to verify that all the signal paths were correct, and there was instant metering available as soon as an AVB stream was connected to the network. The Crown amplifiers’ load-monitoring capability verified that each speaker was working and with the correct loading, and the drag-and-drop audio routing really streamlined our workflow process.”

Comparing his AVB experience with traditional system design and routing, Risgin identified what has made the establishment of the AVB protocol so critical. “We would have been working with either analog audio signals on twisted-pair copper cabling, with the potential for failure increasing as the number of signal paths increased or other IP based transport solutions that would increase the complexity immensely” he explains. “With analog we’d have had to deal with interference, hum, and noise rejection issues while other IP solutions would have required an IT technician— in short, we’d have been working in a different age. Even with the existing networked audio protocols, AVB improved the simplicity of coordinating the system and organization of the components. Ethernet AVB has changed everything – for the better.”

Aspen Custom Electronics Turns To AKG To Deliver An Unprecedented Level Of Clarity At The Payne County Courthouse

Designing sound systems for courtroom applications presents a host of challenges: acoustical, electrical and application-specific requirements make courtroom systems the most mission critical audio installations in the marketplace. After four subpar audio installations at the Payne County Courthouse in Oklahoma, Judge Worthington and the courthouse administration approached Aspen Custom Electronics with a special request to upgrade the courthouse audio system for good. Using an arsenal of AKG equipment which includes the WMS450 Wireless body pack, a DMM 4/2/2 Audio Mixer and two GN30 Goosenecks, Aspen Custom Electronics was able to do what four companies before it could not: install a clear and powerful audio system that exceeds everyone’s expectations.

According to Matt Hall, project manager for Aspen Custom Electronics, the courthouse’s audio system required so many revisions because of its many acoustical anomalies. Built in 1917, it was designed to provide optimal voice projection without the use of a PA system, so even the smallest sounds reverberate throughout the room, and a good portion of the front is covered in marble. What’s more, the witness is able to turn up to 180 degrees while on the stand, looking from judge to jury, and many of the times their voice is very low and withdrawn.

It was clear to Hall that the audio system needed to be clear and focused. After reviewing the layout of the courthouse, Aspen Custom Electronics decided on a GN15 Gooseneck at the judges desk, one GN30 Gooseneck at the attorney’s lectern and one at the witness stand, a WMS450 wireless body pack at the attorney’s lectern and a DMM 4/2/2 Audio Mixer for the whole courthouse. Each mic – for the judge, attorney and witness – uses a ST45 stand and a CK80 Mic Module.

“Unlike entertainment installs, people’s lives hang in the balance in a courtroom installation,” Hall said. “As a result, our systems need to be powerfully accurate and clear, and with AKG, we get everything we are looking for and more.”

The performance of the audio system has exceeded expectations of both Aspen Custom Electronics and members of the court. The witness stand microphone, which was the biggest problem before the installation, delivers clear, intelligible sound no matter which direction they are looking and the judge and court reporter can now hear everything without fail. In addition to the AKG components, the system features a dbx AFS224 processor and a Crown 180A amplifier.

“AKG has a wide range of products, and because of that, we were able to choose the right microphone for the right applications,” Hall continued. “Their products are very affordable as well, which made them easy to recommend to our customer. The pick-up patterns and the variety of shotgun capsules gave us a lot of microphone options, the DMM 4/2/2 is a perfect fit for the application we had in the courtroom, setup was easy and the product worked exactly as we had anticipated.”

AKG Brings Its Digital Automatic Microphone Mixer To The Studio With The New DMM 4/2/4 At InfoComm

AKG is presenting the next addition to its long line of automatic microphone mixers with the DMM 4/2/4 at InfoComm in June. Designed as a studio version of the DMM 4/2/2, the DMM 4/2/4 is designed with a unique and highly effective mixing algorithm that gives it the flexibility to handle nearly any mixing application, from boardrooms to broadcast studios and even houses of worship.

The DMM 4/2/4 comes complete with four microphone and two stereo AUX inputs, intelligent mixing algorithms with a noise sensitive threshold to prevent accidental activation of input channels, and a digital signal processor with a dbx® compressor. VIENNA, Austria – Andy Trott, President of Harman’s mixer business Soundcraft Studer, with facilities in the UK and Switzerland, has also been made responsible for AKG, headquartered in Vienna, Austria.

Stefan Gubi, who has headed up AKG or the past five years, is departing at the end of June, returning to a senior post in the telecom industry from where he originated prior to joining AKG.

Andy Trott, who has architected the ‘digitalisation’ of Soundcraft Studer’s business since he joined in early 2003, is understandably excited at the prospect of leading AKG. Speaking from Vienna today, Trott said, “Having a background as a digital engineer and a recording musician I am absolutely thrilled at the prospect of leading another legendary name in the audio industry. AKG has always been a brand I have revered and having now met with many of the team in Austria I can see many synergies with the new product development programs we have been pursuing in Soundcraft Studer.

“Harman’s strategy is to develop centres of excellence and by bringing our microphone and headphone business closer together with our mixer brands, we will be able to capitalise on engineering innovations currently under way in both camps--for example, we have several digital programs in place that can benefit from sharing one another’s creativity.”

WHITEHORSE, Canada – The Yukon Arts Centre (YAC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development of the arts as an important cultural, social and economic force in the Yukon, and the territory’s premier venue for performing and visual arts, has purchased and installed a Soundcraft Vi6™ large-format digital live sound console. The Vi6 emerged as the clear winner of a nearly year-long period of intensive research and systematic comparison by Patrick Matheson, Technical Director of the YAC, which saw the Vi6 emerge superior in key performance categories including intuitive operation, a fast learning curve and exceptional reliability. In the year since the Vi6 was installed at the YAC, it has acted as the FOH mixing platform--and often simultaneously as the monitor mixer, as well--for a wide range of music artists, consistently delivering great sound and smooth performance.

Furthermore, with nearly half the visiting artists performing at the YAC bringing their own live sound engineers, the console had to be user-friendly. “We reviewed a lot of candidates,” says Matheson, who compared specifications of several different consoles and contacted colleagues asking their experiences with them. The results increasingly pointed towards the Soundcraft Vi6.

When Matheson visited the General Motors Place arena, home to the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks, where a Vi6 had been installed a year earlier, he realized he had found what he was looking for. “We needed a board that had already proven itself, yet was still state of the art, that could perform multiple functions yet be as familiar as an analog console for visiting engineers,” he says. “The Vi6 was all that and more. The touch-screens are easy to navigate – you know where everything is and where it’s routed all the time, which is much better than a single screen where you have to go through several layers to find everything. Plus, we have had a lot of good experience with systems from BSS, Lexicon and Studer, and those technologies are all integrated into the Vi6, such as the Vistonics™ interface. I’m an Apple computer user, so I have a very specific idea of what a simple but effective user interface is, and I have to say that if Steve Jobs designed a digital audio console, the Vi6 would be it. Visiting engineers are on it after just a 10- to 15-minute tutorial. It’s a console that speaks to its operators. It’s been the perfect choice.”

An estimated 70-plus million attendees over the course of the next six months will experience performances in the $61 million, 60,000-square-foot, glass-walled U.S. Pavilion, which will feature four separate performance spaces, which will be used for multimedia performances, with live performances taking place just outside in the plaza near the queue. The sound system’s components, installed and integrated by award-winning audio-visual company Electrosonic, include loudspeakers from JBL’s portable systems including PRX512M powered monitors in addition to VRX Series line arrays, including VRX932LAP powered 2-way line arrays and VRX918SP 18" powered subwoofers. Both the PRX and VRX Series speakers were part of the live stage equipment and run through the Harman soundboard. The technical scale of World Expo 2010 Shanghai is stunning and vast: the sound will need to cover over 3.2 million square feet of event space; 440 channels of Crown amplification totaling 350,000 watts of power as well as nearly 40 miles of fiber-optic cabling will be deployed – its total length can encircle the Tiananmen Square in Beijing 23 times! To meet these enormous requirements, the highly sophisticated Studer Route 6000 audio router’s 1728x1728 I/O capability is more than sufficient to address the 536 I/Os the audio systems will require, including 24 channels of stereo upmixed to 5.1 and 5.1 surround audio downmixed to stereo for the broadcast portions of the shows. BODO, Norway – Bodo, the second largest city in north Norway, and home of the Bodo Kulturhus, is located just north of the Arctic Circle.

The Kulturhus, literally “House of Culture,” is a performing arts center known for staging its own theatrical and musical productions as well as being host to touring productions covering a wide spectrum of music and performing arts.

The Kulturhus has recently added a Soundcraft Vi6 console to its inventory, with sale and service provided by local sound specialist Lydteamet Bodo.

Håvard Christensen, sound engineer at the Kulturhus, explained their decision. “To my eyes and ears, the sound quality of the Vi consoles is unmatched. In addition to this most important feature, the console is proving to be very easy and flexible in use.

“I have had many opportunities to work with Vi’s in various applications over the years — and with good reason this platform has become a quasi standard here in Norway.”

Christensen is an avid sound engineer in both the monitor and FOH positions, and is known for his work on prestigious projects like the Nordnorsk Symfoniorkester and the Festspillene i Nord Norge. Besides holding a permanent position at the Kulturhus he also runs his own production studio.

Morten Buvik from Lydteamet Bodo, adds: “Our own Vi6’s have been a great success since we invested in our first console in 2008. The main reason, apart from the obvious requirement for a digital console, was the exceptional sound quality.

“The consoles have been used on many productions ranging from Opera, to Theater Revue shows and Rock Festivals.

“The Vi’s are liked by our own technical staff as well as the guest engineers we supply — so it was almost a logical consequence that the Kulturhus also decided to go the Vi route.

Whisper House Draws Ovations At The Old Globe Theatre With AKG’s Frequency Agile DMS 700 Wireless Microphone System And JBL VRX Series Loudspeakers

In outfitting San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre for Duncan Sheik’s musical “Whisper House,” the sound design team of Dan Moses Schreier and associate designer David Bullard – who designed the audio for the current Broadway hits Westside Story, A Little Night Music and Sondheim On Sondheim - drew on years of combined experience to select the optimal equipment for every scenario of the complex audio production. With an on-stage orchestra, a cappella vocal performances, large-group sequences and loud, complicated battle scenes transitioning throughout the entire play, they needed a great sounding audio system that could reproduce it all – from loud, overbearing sound effects to quiet, intimate spoken scenes- and ultimately selected AKG’s frequency-agile DMS 700 wireless microphone system and JBL VRX loudspeakers.

AKG DMS 700 digital wireless microphone systems were outfitted with a variety of AKG handheld mics, such as the C5 condenser, D5 dynamic, D7 dynamic handheld. The most impressive feature, according to Bullard, was the digital system’s ability to do frequency scanning for the entire spectrum and automatically determine the optimal channels to use. Open mics for on-stage musicians created a challenge. Acoustic leakage from traditional stage monitors led Bullard and Schreier to outfit the Whisper House singers with AKG IVM 4 in ear monitors using AKG SPR4 pocket receivers. Bullard reports “the male lead wasn’t accustomed to using in-ear monitors, but once he heard his vocal through the AKG IVM4 system he said ‘this is fantastic.’ The system was easy to use, easy to set up and reliable.” According to Schreier, the premium audio quality and ultra-wide tuning range of the AKG equipment provided reliable transmissions that always sounded crisp and intelligible. “The AKG equipment made this a true plug-and-play system,” Bullard said. “We were able to set the channels and adjust all of the variables in a matter of minutes and then just hand the microphones to the performers and we heard strong, intelligible sound throughout each performance.”

Meeting the demand for high-fidelity reinforcement of Duncan Sheik’s score, left and right clusters of JBL VRX932LAP Powered 12-inch 2-way line array loudspeakers were suspended from the proscenium for the orchestra-level audience, and two arrays of VRX928LA speakers targeted at the balcony to provide the perfect amount of coverage throughout. As soon as the JBL speakers were set up, the sound crew noticed the VRX system took the room from acoustically dead to “full and warm.” The VRX cabinets adjustable EQ eliminated the need for additional outboard processing and allowed Bullard to quickly achieve even response and coverage. Four VRX918SP subwoofers, which were mounted in the ceiling, gave more than enough power to produce low frequency impact of Whisper House’s battle scenes.

To reinforce sound effects, a surround sound system was installed incorporating JBL AE Compact series AC26 loudspeakers. “The AE series speakers were positioned close to the audience and gave full 120 x 60 foot coverage without overwhelming the front row,” commented Ballard. “The VRX and AE series speakers that we used here are also very versatile, and with this musical, we had to really push the limits in terms of different audio applications.”

Crown iTech amplifiers powered the JBL speakers , and audio was mixed using a Soundcraft Vi6 digital console outfitted with Lexicon FX6 reverbs and a rack-mounted Lexicon PCM 96 Processor. Bullard and Schreier were able to remotely configure Crown and JBL system components using Harman HiQnet control protocol and Harman System Architect software which greatly enhanced the workflow.

“The Harman Professional equipment, primarily the JBL loudspeakers and AKG microphones, provided a level of performance and an ease of use that we simply couldn’t get with any other brand,” commented Schreier. “The whole crew was more than pleased with the results, as were David and I, and we will certainly look to Harman Professional equipment for other theater setups in the future.”

The CP-X2511 offers XGA resolution and a variety of features dedicated to easy maintenance. These include a hybrid filter, which requires less frequent cleaning, enabling longer operation. In addition, the lamp door is on the top while the filter cover slides in and out from the front bottom, making maintenance and replacement of these parts easy.

The CP-X2511 features 16 Watts of built-in audio and, with its Audio Pass Through function, the projector can output audio in stand-by mode, allowing audiences to listen to external speakers via the projector’s audio output. Harman Professional Amps Up Efforts In China, Expands Sales Team With Seasoned Executives

NORTHRIDGE, California — In a highly advanced, yet-remarkably simple audio system design that points to the future of professional-grade integration, On Stage Audio (OSA) this month deployed the world’s first real-world test of the IEEE 802.1 AVB Bridging protocol. OSA’s team, led by Jim Risgin, Vice President, configured and controlled a Crown Audio, dbx, and BSS Audio A/V system using Harman HiQnet for the Compuware national sales meeting in Detroit, Michigan and ran audio using Ethernet AVB standards. The event, which took place at the Masonic Theater in downtown Detroit, allowed a crowd of 1,500 attendees to enjoy pristine digital audio and let the audio systems crew experience the future of A/V systems configuration, one in which everything works, all the time, and in which simplicity, not complexity, is the norm.

This watershed event marked the first time that AVB — the only standard transport protocol that allows time-synchronized, super-low-latency streaming audio and video over IEEE 802 Ethernet networks – was used as the primary audio transport for a major professional system. Harman is a leader in the AVB initiative, chairing and editing the IEEE P1722 Committee and editing the IEEE P802.1Qat Committee and the company is also a pioneer in AVB switching and product development, via the groundbreaking efforts of the Harman Corporate Technology Group and System Development and Integration Group (SDIG). Their dedication to the development of AVB is signified by their membership in the AVnu Alliance; the industry forum dedicated to promoting the adoption of the IEEE 802.1 AVB and related IEEE 1722 and IEEE 1733 standards over various networking link-layers for the advancement of professional quality audio video.

At the core of Risgin’s design are 24 Crown CTs 3000 power amplifiers fitted with USP4/AVB cards, four 24-port BSS Audio / NETGEAR AVB bridges as well as four dbx SC 32 Digital Matrix Processors which were used as the AVB “on ramps” for the system processing. The entire system (DSP and AVB) was controlled using Harman’s HiQnet protocol and System Architect software.

Jim Risgin, himself an early and active contributor to the AVB movement, assembled the Compuware AVB system working closely with SDIG. Using the intuitive and customizable HiQnet System Architect drag-and-drop design interface to design his system, Risgin configured and programmed the dbx SC 32 Digital Matrix Processor for processing and using the AVB network as the matrix automatically instructed groups of Ethernet AVB amplifier channels associated with each physical zone to switch to that networked audio signal.

The dbx SC 32’s were deployed as the ‘on ramps’ were used to convert the incoming analog audio to digital AVB streams. Fourteen audio streams were then routed via HiQnet System Architect to the 24 Crown CTs amplifiers with Crown USP4 4th generation DSP-based PIP™ (Programmable Input Processor) input modules connecting the amplifiers to the Ethernet network. This enabled real-time transport of digital audio via Ethernet AVB and also allowed the CTs amplifiers to be remotely controlled and monitored via HiQnet System Architect.

“The systems performed flawlessly,” says Risgin, who notes that AVB-induced latency was less than 500 microseconds for all devices, and that delay from input to output maintained the <2ms specified by the AVB protocol. “Harman has done a wonderful job of making a complex process far more simple,” he states. “Everything on the network was completely transparent – troubleshooting was simple because we were able to verify that all the signal paths were correct, and there was instant metering available as soon as an AVB stream was connected to the network. The Crown amplifiers’ load-monitoring capability verified that each speaker was working and with the correct loading, and the drag-and-drop audio routing really streamlined our workflow process.”

Comparing his AVB experience with traditional system design and routing, Risgin identified what has made the establishment of the AVB protocol so critical. “We would have been working with either analog audio signals on twisted-pair copper cabling, with the potential for failure increasing as the number of signal paths increased or other IP based transport solutions that would increase the complexity immensely” he explains. “With analog we’d have had to deal with interference, hum, and noise rejection issues while other IP solutions would have required an IT technician— in short, we’d have been working in a different age. Even with the existing networked audio protocols, AVB improved the simplicity of coordinating the system and organization of the components. Ethernet AVB has changed everything – for the better.”

Canada’s Axe Productions Puts New JBL VERTEC® Line Array System To The Test At K-97 Classic Rock Riot

Canadian-based A/V service provider Axe Productions recently deployed a complete JBL VERTEC® line array system in the Edmonton, Canada Shaw Conference Center to support the 2nd Annual K-97 Classic Rock Riot. The production, which featured a performance by former Bad Company front man Paul Rodgers, marked the first implementation of the company’s new VERTEC system.

Axe Owner, Jon Beckett, supplied 16 VERTEC VT4889-1 fullsize line array loudspeakers (eight per side) powered by 16 Crown I-Tech 8000 amplifiers, which were configured with Harman’s HiQnet™ System Architect™ software for remote control and monitoring of the system. “Our company’s business is rider-driven, so adding VERTEC to our inventory was an easy choice,” stated Beckett. “These are the first large-format line array loudspeakers we have ever purchased, and after getting the system put together and into use, I would say that the quality of the sound is outstanding.”

To ensure that the brand-new line array system was perfectly configured for the show Beckett utilized the vocal talents of one of his company’s own sound engineers to test the system. “It’s one thing to set up a rig and play a CD through the system, but it’s another to plug in and hear that same clarity with a familiar live voice,” continued Beckett. “When our engineer, who is actually quite a talented vocalist in his own right, started to sing, the sound filled the entire hall with absolutely no feedback. The VERTEC system sounded great right out of the box, using JBL’s factory-supplied V4 DSP settings.”

Le Mobile Recording Studio Captures Coachella With JBL LSR2300 Studio Monitors

The 2010 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in southern California was once again an overwhelming success, drawing a record attendance of 225,000 people over a 3-day span. At Coachella’s Mojave Stage, Ian C. Charbonneau of Le Mobile Remote Recording relied on JBL LSR2328 studio monitors to mix a roster of top artists for live webcast.

During the Festival’s three days, the Mojave Stage hosted performances by 30 acts, including Devo, Grizzly Bear, Imogen Heap, Julian Casablancas, Shooter Jennings and Les Claypool. In other words, rest was not an option for Charbonneau. “When you’re mixing live from 10 AM to 1 AM for three days, it’s a tough gig for the ears,” Charbonneau said, “but it’s such a great time doing it, especially when you love music and you love what you do.”

Not only does the schedule itself pose a challenge, but Charbonneau notes that mixing live music for broadcast leaves little room for error. “With live broadcasts and recording live music, you always have to be on top of everything, because you only have one chance to get it right,” he said. “When you work in an environment like that you never know what you’re up against, so it’s very important to be comfortable with your monitors.”

To that end, Charbonneau selected a stereo pair of JBL LSR2328 studio monitors as part of his setup at Coachella, having first used them when recording the Andrea Bocelli and David Foster “My Christmas” concert at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, which aired on PBS television on November 26.

“I couldn’t believe how good they sound while being so affordable,” Charbonneau said. “I figured Coachella would be the ultimate test for the LSR2300’s. It’s non-stop operation in a loud environment. “When recording or mixing live in such a challenging environment, you can easily be thrown off by so many elements. Having monitors you know well and that you can rely on sonically, surely is one of the most important things.”
According to Charbonneau, the LSR2328 monitors passed the test with flying colors. “I was very pleased with the results,” Charbonneau said. “It has lots of power, a very nice low end, clarity and ultimately, it’s really proven to be a workhorse.”

Harman Professional Expands Sales And Support Of Operations in Malaysia With New Order Processing Team

Soundcraft Puts The Si Into City Showcase

Now in its ninth year, City Showcase took place for the first time this month at the British Music Experience (and other venues within London’s O2 Arena complex) over a 4-day period. With a reputation for showcasing new talent, City Showcase is a not-for-profit company whose aim is to help unsigned acts make it in the commercial world of today’s music industry.

This year’s festival was dubbed City Showcase Rocklands, with many venues in southeast London participating in the build-up, providing the opportunity for the best to play the stage at BME, the interactive music museum within the O2.

City Showcase can boast many new discoveries over the years, and if the mixing console had a role to play in providing an edge for the wide variety of talent on view, then Soundcraft’s new 64-input Si3 digital surface, in the capable hands of experienced FOH engineer Pete Freeman, can also take a pat on the back.

By day Freeman is technical manager and FOH sound engineer at Gibson Guitar Studio in London’s Rathbone Street (Gibson being one of the five major sponsors of the BME). This was his first year on duty at the Festival, where he was called on to mix the bands and act as general site manager under the guise of his own company, APA Live Events Ltd.

And he ensured those supporting sites were well-equipped. Various compact Soundcraft Notepad mixers (some with integral digital effects processors) and small self-powered PA systems were installed in the O2 Shop and Union Square, and popular bars and restaurants such as Slug & Lettuce, s&m, Frankie and Benny’s, Spur, Las Iguanas and Ha Ha.

Each hosted one act per day, and on his choice of the Soundcraft Notepad, Freeman says, “We needed the mixer to be easy to understand, and to facilitate a self-soundcheck system. The Notepad was great for this as it worked really well.”

Back at the 500-capacity BME sound stage, Freeman was flying around the Si3 he has used a thousand times before at Gibson.

“The feel and work flow make it really easy to get around the board swiftly, and create a mix as an act is taking the stage. I’ve always loved the desk’s FaderGlow™ too!” The patented system shows what mode the faders are in, and the OLED displays in the output section ensure that the sound engineer never gets lost in his board navigation or operational status.”

In fact, only one band was accompanied by its own sound engineer — requiring a fast-track induction from Freeman. “It’s a really simple desk to explain,” he says, “but that’s probably because I know it inside out.”

Aside from FaderGlow, there are many features that he likes about the Si3. “I love the effects, and the preamps are great even when running upwards of 48 channels. It’s nice not to have to bring a stage box and run a multicore if it’s not necessary.”

The ease with which he was able to soundcheck acts and then save and recall the settings also simplified his task. “Cues can be designed on your laptop and then simply loaded onto the console via USB stick — it’s things like this that are useful.”

Finally, he says, there is the desk’s design aesthetic. “I think it has a real retro 70's cool look about if with the FaderGlow and the case colouration. It makes you feel like soundchecking with the theme from Shaft!

“Different horses for different courses I suppose …”

Audio Plus Selects JBL Loudspeakers For Even, Controlled Sound Throughout The Community Pentecostal Church

After a thorough investigation of the layout and worship services at Community Pentecostal Church in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, A/V design company Audio Plus Sound Solutions Inc. upgraded the church’s audio system with JBL loudspeakers, chosen for their ability to deliver solid clarity and strong acoustic gain. Electing to install three clusters of PD series loudspeakers, Audio Plus was able to cover an additional 20 percent of the seating area for the 1,000-person congregation, providing the church with a sound system that was both versatile and extremely powerful.

Before the Community Pentecostal Church hired Audio Plus for the upgrade, its system was falling apart, according to System Engineer Brian Davis. The original component JBL loudspeaker system was still operating but it didn’t cover the entire audience or offer reasonable intelligibility because of design oversights, and the concrete at the center of the room made implementing new communication technology very difficult. What’s more, the older acoustic repairs didn’t leave the room performing well enough for good speech intelligibility or music clarity.

For the first step of the renovation, Audio Plus measured the church with both SIA Acoustic Tools and had David Yake of Yake Engineering Systems measure with TEF programs to find out what acoustical engineering was necessary, and also interviewed the administration to find out the exact purpose and requirements of the system. They found that the primary focus was speech intelligibility, but there was also a need for music clarity and performance.

“We took the time to break everything down and figure out what the need was for gain control, how the system was going to be used, and who was going to use it,” Davis said. “We felt confident using the Harman products because it gave the church the ability to host any event with confidence and also gave them tremendous ease of use.”

Upgrading the system meant a complete revamp of the entire layout: the speakers, the amplifiers, even the acoustic design. Audio Plus installed three clusters of PD series loudspeakers--each consisting of a PD5212/95 over a PD5200/95--and a small pie-shaped area in the middle using PD5212/43 and PD5212/64. The main loudspeaker system was completed with the installation of the JBL ASB6128V subwoofer. Additional Harman Products include Crown CTs and XTi amplifiers, BSS London BLU-16 processors, and JBL MRX512M floor monitors.

“We’ve used the PD series before in other hostile acoustic environments because of its control,” Davis said. “It has wonderful horizontal and vertical control, and the fidelity and non-aggressive horn make it a pleasant loudspeaker that can handle anything you need.”

Lionel Richie And Premier Sound Services Rock Baton Rouge With Soundcraft Vi6™

Premier Sound Services of Baton Rouge, Louisiana recently provided the sound reinforcement system for a Lionel Richie concert as part of the Our Lady of the Lake Foundation’s 25th anniversary benefit gala. The system featured a variety of audio products from Harman Professional, including a Soundcraft Vi6 digital console at the front-of-house position. The concert took place at the Baton Rouge River Center and served to raise money for the Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.

For the event, PSS provided a Soundcraft Vi6, which the company purchased in late 2009. PSS utilized an expansion card to bring the Vi6 to 96 inputs. “We bought the Vi6 because of its analog feel and the built-in Lexicon effects are superior to the effects in other digital consoles,” says Russ Bryant, co-owner (with Brian Gordon) of PSS. “The expandability to 96 inputs without the need for additional sidecars was a huge benefit and, of course, the sonic quality is amazing.”

The main PA system included 12 JBL VERTEC® midsize line array elements per side, eight VT4887 compact line array elements per side for out fill, with six VT4886 subcompact line array elements as front fill, with two arrays of four VT4886 loudspeakers with two VT4883 subcompact arrayable subwoofers each for side fills. Crown I-Tech 8000 amplifiers powered the VT4888 and VT4887 line arrays, while I-Tech HD amplifiers powered the VT4886 loudspeakers. In addition, PSS deployed 16 JBL SR712M stage monitors, along with four VT4886 loudspeakers and two VT4883 subwoofers as drum wedges. The system was configured and controlled via Harman’s HiQnet™ System Architect™.

Studer Vista 5 SR Console Helps Carrie Underwood’s North American Tour Bring Country To The Continent

Leading sound company Clair is providing live sound reinforcement for Carrie Underwood’s current North American tour, with a Studer Vista 5 SR digital console handling front-of-house duties. A previous winner of American Idol, Underwood is one of country music’s biggest stars and recently earned Entertainer of the Year honors from the Academy of Country Music for the second year in a row--the only woman to ever accomplish that feat.

Underwood’s current production is elaborate, to say the least, with 12 tractor-trailer trucks alone transporting the tour’s equipment. When it comes to mixing each show, however, front-of-house engineer Randy Lane says his responsibilities are relatively straightforward, though challenging all the same. “I like to make sure that Carrie’s vocal is the focal point, but I’m also trying to make sure that what the band plays on stage is conveyed accurately to the audience,” he says. “She has a top-notch band with her and I’m trying to capture exactly what they play and just stay out of the way.”

As is often the case, Lane’s familiarity with the Studer Vista family of consoles is rooted in broadcast. “A lot of television studios in Los Angeles use Vista 8 consoles and I had listened to some of those,” he says. “I was very impressed with how creative you could be without having to rely on plug-ins. Just having the front end of the console sounding right is a huge step.”

In addition, Lane notes that while the Vista 5 SR has reinforced his opinion of Vista consoles, it has also made him a convert in other ways. “Honestly, before using the Vista 5SR, I still preferred analog consoles, because I never felt that the microphone preamp and EQ stages of digital consoles were of as high quality,” Lane says. “The Vista 5 SR has totally changed my view on that.”

With unrivaled technology supporting a massive collection of talent, Carrie Underwood’s tour has been an overwhelming success to date. “The crowds have been fantastic,” Lane adds. “The first few shows were in smaller venues and in the fall, the tour plans to move to the larger arenas.

Every day at rehearsal, she was 100 percent ready for what she was doing with each song. It’s an absolute pleasure to see that level of professionalism and it certainly doesn’t hurt that she can belt it out.”

The new CP-X4011N, CP-X3011N, CP-X2511N and CP-X2011N feature networking technology that enables users to share data between multiple projectors.

The four new projectors also make it easy to send images from one or more networked computers. In addition, Hitachi’s Messenger function enables users to transmit text data to any or all projectors on the network. This is an easy and efficient way to send announcements, such as campus notifications, school activities and daily schedules.

The CP-X4011N, CP-X3011N, CP-X2511N and CP-X2011N also include new features such as a USB connection, allowing users to quickly and easily display content from a PC via a USB cable. A simple ¼” TRS connection between the PCM92 and a foot controller and foot switch makes it easy for a musician to change presets and adjust parameters during a performance. The first public event, a training session entitled “Designing The World’s First Ethernet AVB Systems With HiQnet System Architect”, will focus on configuring an Ethernet AVB system with System Architect in a House of Worship system design, and will take place on Wednesday June 9 from 2:30pm-4:30pm at room N208. Swing House Synergizes Sunset Strip and South by Southwest With Soundcraft

As it has done for the past three years, Los Angeles-based Swing House Productions provided live audio services and event production for performances at the Rusty Spurs club in Austin during the South by Southwest festival. This year, however, Swing House made a change by drawing from its own audio inventory for the festival, deploying a Soundcraft Vi4™ console for Rusty Spurs’ indoor stage and a Soundcraft GB4 console for a smaller stage in the outdoor area.

Starting out as a rehearsal studio, Swing House Productions has expanded into studio recording, rental department, full event production and Artist development and Management. The company’s work at South by Southwest is an extension of its relationship with the renowned Roxy music club in Hollywood. “Each year at South by Southwest, the Roxy sponsors one venue in Austin and that venue essentially transforms into the Roxy for the week,” says Phil Jaurigui, President of Swing House Productions.

This transformation includes performances by artists who are synonymous with the Roxy. To wit, this year saw the likes of Tom Morello’s Street Sweeper Social Club, Minus The Bear, Michael Monroe of Hanoi Rocks, and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. In total, Rusty Spurs hosted 112 bands over the span of five days.

Because Rusty Spurs does not normally feature live music, the onus fell on Swing House to not only set up a complete audio system, but one that would recreate the feel of the Roxy. “Rusty Spurs is a regular bar with no stage and no PA, so we provided the PA, the backline, the staging and everything else that it takes to change a country bar into a rock and roll nightclub,” Juarigui says.

To that end, Swing House brought its Vi4 console from its Los Angeles headquarters to Austin for the week. The audio system also included JBL SRX728 loudspeakers and SRX718S subwoofers for the main stage, with powered JBL EON15 portable loudspeakers for the outdoor stage. Crown amplifiers power the audio system, which also includes system EQ from dbx.

“Tom Der of Soundcraft turned us onto the Vi4 last year when he rented it to use for South by Southwest and we loved it,” Jaurigui says. “We have our own now and we use it in our studio for rehearsals with everyone from Maroon 5 to Iggy and the Stooges.”

Sam Coy served as the primary sound engineer for the week, which required him to quickly and repeatedly switch bands over from stage to stage for 14 hours each day. With little time to spare between performances, reliability of the audio consoles was as important as sound quality. “The attendance at Rusty Spurs was higher than it’s ever been,” Jaurigui says. “It was packed all the way through and while it was overwhelming at times, we didn’t have a single instance where either console went down.”

Moreover, Jaurigui notes that the Vi4 is not only easy to use, but also ideal for high-impact, high-volume performances. “The Vi4 is so intuitive where even if you’re only used to analog consoles you can pick it up quickly,” Jaurigui adds. “The sound is so clean and it’s very powerful and very punchy—you can really get that aggressive sound out of it that you need with rock acts.”

In addition, because the Vi4 packs so many features into a reasonably sized chassis, the transformation of Rusty Spurs into the Roxy was even more seamless. “There are so many built-in effects that sound great and it doesn’t take up much space for a fairly big console,” Jaurigui says. “Even in a small bar like Rusty Spurs, it fits comfortably. It looks great, too. All week, people were walking up to the console and were fascinated by it.”

Professional technical A/V consultant Under the Wire, recently completed construction on the home studio of guitar legend Zakk Wylde, installing a multitude of dbx® equipment to help Zakk and his band, Black Label Society record their new album, which is set to be released the summer of 2010.

Vienna State Opera’s Sound Designer Selects A Complete AKG Package To Provide Sophisticated Audio Transmissions For The Vienna Opernball

Ministry of Sound chooses Soundcraft Si2 Digital Console

Ministry of Sound London’s Technical Manager Alex Barrand moved a step nearer his sonic nirvana with the commissioning of a Soundcraft Si2 digital sound desk for the famous main dance room, The Box. At the PLASA Show last September he was introduced to the Soundcraft Si1 by Harman UK/ROI distributor Sound Technology’s Dave Bradshaw (also former head of technology at the Ministry).

“There are so many digital desks on the market — but I realised that this was the easiest analogue-to-digital conversion desk money can buy,” commented Alex.

As it transpired, Ministry opted for the larger Si2 model. Whereas the standard Si1 has 32 mic inputs mapped on 16 faders, with four dedicated stereo line channels and four dedicated FX Returns from the Lexicon FX processors, the Si2 has 48 mic inputs mapped on 24 faders.

“My other house technicians are delighted with the upgrade,” confirms Alex, who has long been familiar with the Soundcraft topography and excellent signature sound. “ I have used a Vi before and as well as one of the old SM24’s, and have always felt comfortable. But I had never been on this.”

The console was pressed into service straight out of the box. “After patching the desk on the virtual version then uploading the show data it was extremely easy,” he said. “The sound was the best we have ever had, from the moment we turned it on.”

The Si2 is used as master mixer for the main room setups, taking feeds from all the booth DJ mixers — as well as bands. Alex Barrand says the extra fader group provided by the Si2 was a real bonus, adding that he no longer has any need for an outboard rack … although it is simple to make third party inserts, such as a valve compressor.

“With four Lexicon processors and each channel with its own gate, comps and EQ using dbx and BSS heritage components I have everything I need inline. It’s got a lot more weight behind it. Plus every input and output has its own dedicated input (output) socket on the back of the console.”

The Si2 also allows him to download a virtual console on his laptop and save show mixes to a USB from home.

Finally, the 24 Group/Aux busses, available at all times, have made Alex Barrand’s life (and those of his technicians) a breeze. “On our old analogue desks it was a nightmare to do switchovers — you had to put together your outboard racks every night. But using the bus sends on the Si2 anything can be done very quickly.

“Even the strictly analogue guys are over the moon.”

NORTHRIDGE, California — India started its new year in style, with one of January’s most exciting events being the Hampi Utsav 2010, taking place in the south of the country. A regular annual event in Karnataka at Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage site, this year’s three-day Festival was held on a grand scale by uniting with the 500th anniversary celebration of the Vilayanagara emperor, Sri Krishnadevaraya’s ascendancy to the throne.

More than 300 hundred artists performed over three days on a 200 ft. x 100 ft. stage at Hampi, with performances that included various music and Indian dance forms by such leading Indian artists as Hema Malini, Mysore, Manjunath, and Pandit Jasrat, along with international performers. The audience was estimated at between 100,000-150,000 people on each of the three days.

Three sound rental companies, V&P Sound Pvt. Ltd., Sound & Light Professionals and SoundEffects.Com, collectively provided the sound system for this major event, with JBL VERTEC® line arrays chosen for use as the sound reinforcement system for the primary concert stage.

The main left and right array hangs comprised 24 JBL VerTec VT4889s and 16 VT4880A subwoofers, all powered by Crown I-Tech 5000HD, 9000HD, and 12000HD amplifiers. The system relied on JBL’s world-standard V4 DSP presets, developed specifically to take advantage of Crown’s LevelMAX™ multi-stage limiting in the I-Tech HD amps.

Additionally, 16 VerTec VT4888s were used for outfills and center fills, with eight JBL SRX 728s in place as the center-located ground based subwoofers. A dbx DriveRack 4800 handled loudspeaker output-zone processing. A Soundcraft Vi6 digital mixing console was deployed at the FOH location.

VERTEC line arrays were suspended from a height of 18 meters (59 feet) above the ground for optimal sound dispersion and audience coverage. BSS Audio™ Provides Sound Processing and Control For Burj Khalifa, The World’s Tallest Building

The family of advanced Soundweb™ processors from BSS Audio™ has been used extensively by one of Dubai’s most progressive system integrators, Bond Communications, to provide end-to-end networking at the Burj Khalifa (formerly Burj Dubai). This project, six years in the making, is the largest ever undertaken by the company — and the tallest building in the world.

Harman Professional distributors GSL Professional LLC provided the BSS Audio devices to Bond Communications. These advanced audio tools function on most of the Tower’s 164 floors, and GSL’s Marketing & PR Manager, Glen Kershaw, states, “We were selling these products to Bond pretty much up until the day of the opening — and I anticipate that the after-sales support will be ongoing following the opening.”

Located in the Downtown district — and constructed on a 500-acre plot widely described as “the most prestigious square kilometer on earth” — the building itself boasts some amazing statistics.

The Burj forms a vibrant community for thousands of residents, employees, hotel guests and tourists, with up to 12,000 people living, working and playing inside a building that stands at more than 800 metres / 2,625 ft. The piéce de rèsistance is the tower’s 124th floor observation deck, ‘At the Top, Burj Khalifa’, which offers 360-degree views of the city and is open to the public.

When construction work was at its most intense, more than 12,000 people from over 100 countries were working every day at the Burj Khalifa site, which took 22 million man-hours to build.

Bond Communications AV package manager, Omar Chataw, confirms that his company was asked to provide an integrated, fully-redundant A/V system and the scope of work included networking, cabling, security, home automation, AV conferencing, two-way radio system and master control system.

Chataw knew that the design specification called for a CobraNet™ backbone, which would allow any input to be routed to any output over standard Ethernet.

His introduction to BSS Audio’s catalogue came when he was asked to trial the scalable DSP system on a nearby satellite project — the Lake Hotel. “GSL Professional provided really good support in terms of both knowledge and service,” he said. “The BSS Audio specification was excellent — in particular the newer Soundweb London products with the digital audio bus, which also offered four times the processing capability.”

Chataw’s team constructed the network around large quantities of the newer Soundweb London family members, launched in January 2008. These include the BLU-800, BLU-320, BLU-160 and BLU-120 — products which feature a 256-channel, low-latency, fault tolerant bus. It works on Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable and allows a direct connection between devices over distances of up to 100 meters. This provided Omar Chataw with another compelling reason for adopting the BSS Audio platform.

The building contains seven separate control rooms (and a master), each with a number of Soundweb London products (18 of the newer devices are used in total). As there was a requirement for the audio to run over a standard Ethernet network between the control rooms, CobraNet had been the obvious choice, and thus a BLU-800 is located in each of the control rooms as the main configurable hub.

This transmits the CobraNet bundle direct to CobraNet-equipped amplifiers, ensuring that the signal is kept in the digital domain throughout.

The Soundweb London digital audio bus is used throughout, allowing each zone to have its own fault tolerance. The central control room uses 2 x BLU-800, 2 x BLU-160 and 5 x BLU-120 devices to handle a matrix of over 100 inputs and 100 outputs, taking feeds from the main music server and local line inputs.

Each of the other control areas house either two or three amp/processor racks — giving a total of between 22 and 25 for the entire construction. Only the newer Soundweb London products could create a matrix of this size due to the combination of abundant processing capability and the high channel counts involved with the individual devices.

An AMX control system is employed in various zones throughout the system which interfaces seamlessly with the Soundweb London devices via RS-232 to allow quick and full control of the audio system.

As a result each area is able to listen to the same centralized source or to a source different than the others without any interference. The music system covers all the public areas including corridors, lift lobbies, terraces, reception areas — as well as a number of fine dining rooms and bars inside the world-first Armani Hotel Dubai, which are equipped with local source select and volume controls.

At the same time meeting rooms are provided with complete audio visual solutions for presentations and conferencing, with high-definition capabilities.

Summarized Omar Chataw, “The DSP processing power of the newer BSS Audio products and the digital audio bus provided us with a perfect opportunity. But although we have a strong technical team, we wouldn’t have gone down this route unless we knew we would get full programming, technical and integration support from both BSS Audio and GSL Professional.”

SW Audio Visual and JBL VERTEC® Line Arrays Deliver World-Class Audio For Winter Olympics’ O Zone

In a unique application of JBL VERTEC® line arrays, SW Audio Visual deployed a complete outdoor wintertime entertainment audio system to accommodate up to 50,000 people for the Richmond O Zone, one of the official celebration sites of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The O Zone was open for the duration of the Games from February 12-28, and featured live performances by some of Canada’s most successful musical artists across a broad range of genres.

Situated on 60 acres in the heart of the Richmond City Centre, the O Zone featured large high-definition video screens to display the competitions, along with outdoor ice skating, art exhibits, ice sculptures and even a virtual reality bobsled attraction. The O Zone also hosted theme nights celebrating Canada’s diverse cultures and regions, including a Chinese New Year Celebration on February 14.

“There were all kinds of performers throughout the two-and-a-half weeks the O Zone was open,” said event audio engineer Rob Aarden of SW Audio Visual. “The variety of talent was impressive, but it also posed a challenge because every act had its own unique set of requirements. We made sure we had enough gear to adapt to each situation.”

The main stage at the O Zone featured 16 VERTEC VT4889 full-size line array elements per side, along with six VT4888DP-CN powered midsize line array elements with DrivePack® technology per side in place for out fill arrays. A total of 14 JBL SR4718 subwoofers provided supplemental low-frequency support for the system, which also included 14 JBL TTM149 stage monitors.

“I was really happy with the performance of the VT4889’s and was pleased with the outstanding amount of high end the system had,” Aarden said. “Because we had so many guest engineers working for the different artists, it was crucial to have a reliable and dynamic system. Everything ran smoothly.”

JBL PD Series Loudspeakers Rock The New ShoWare Center

The beginning of 2009 saw the opening of a brand-new arena in the Seattle region known as the ShoWare Center. Located in the suburb of Kent, the ShoWare Center is a multi-purpose venue that plays home to the Western Hockey League’s Seattle Thunderbirds. Milwaukie, Oregon-based Delta AV and Seattle-based Sparling collaborated in the design of a state-of-the-art JBL loudspeaker system for the new arena.

The ShoWare Center has a seating capacity of 6,500, with retractable seating to accommodate other events such as concerts and other sporting events. With this in mind, the arena needed a PA system that was as powerful as it was flexible.

Moreover, because the arena’s primary event is hockey, the venue posed more than its share of acoustical challenges. “Acoustically speaking, hockey venues can be a nightmare because of the large amount of glass and ice in the arena,” said Steve Jellerson, Vice President of Delta AV. “Because of that, the system needed to be highly controllable.”

Delta AV and Sparling developed a main PA system of 12 distributed clusters featuring a range of JBL PD Series loudspeakers. The system features six JBL PD5322/64 loudspeakers, six PD5322/95 loudspeakers, 12 PD5122 loudspeakers, with eight ASB6128 subwoofers. Additionally, two PD5212/95 and two PD5212/64 loudspeakers serve as ice fills. Eighteen Crown I-Tech amplifiers power the system, which also features networked processing from BSS Audio. Harman’s HiQnet™ System Architect™ platform is used for amplifier monitoring.

“It was a bonus to be able to add the PD5122 boxes to control the lower midrange pattern, because we wanted to keep as much sound off the side walls and ceilings as possible,” said Richard Erwin, Audiovisual Project Manager for Sparling. “With the PD5122’s we could deliver a better controlled lower vocal range to the stands. Delta AV did an incredible job with the rigging and we didn’t have to move a single enclosure once the system was set up.”

“The system has performed great,” Jellerson said. “It kicks, it’s loud and penetrates in an acoustically hostile environment.”

JBL PD Series Loudspeakers Complete An Acoustical Masterpiece At St. Francis Of Assisi Church

A new audio system at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Bend, Oregon, features JBL Professional PD Series loudspeakers, chosen to deliver the highest articulation with the least amount of speakers possible. Morgan Sound of Lynwood, Washington was responsible for the acoustic consulting and design and, using its past experience with the PD Series as the deciding factor in the choice of speakers, teamed with Anderson Group International of Eugene, Oregon for the installation.

The installation at the St. Francis of Assisi Church initially presented many challenges to the team: it’s a very large space with polished concrete floors, CMU walls and granite and marble covering the substantial altar platform, all of which work together to create a very reverberant room. There was a desire to maximize the presentation of sound without filling the entire auditorium with large, overbearing speakers, which is why Morgan Sound President Charlie Morgan ultimately chose the JBL PD series, powered by Crown amplifiers. With the exceptional pattern control of the JBL speakers, the church presenters are able to reach high SPL levels when needed with excellent speech clarity.

“As the Application Engineer at JBL, Jay Fullmer’s advice was most helpful in using the PD boxes,” said Charlie Morgan, President of Morgan Sound. “The sound in the room is focused, very intelligible and even throughout the entire seating area. In short, we couldn’t be happier with the result.”

In addition to the JBL PD series loudspeakers and Crown amps, there are JBL Control 29AV loudspeakers, all of which are controlled by a BSS London processor. An analog mixer on the platform gives the choir director control of the local inputs, and there is also the option to run everything in static mode with 16 microphone channels controlled through the BSS London processor. The system includes Harman’s HiQnet™ System Architect™ software for quick and easy configuration.

Lokesh Pilots Fully Loaded Soundcraft Si3 As Indian Air Force Shows Its Firepower

Soundcraft’s compact Si3 digital desk continues to be put through its paces in the Indian sub-continent by New Delhi-based rental company, Dhawan Electricals Pvt Ltd — most recently in front of the President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil.

Owner Yogesh Dhawan reports that Vayu Shakti 2010, a 3-hour spectacular which took place in the remote desert location of Pokhran, Rajasthan, was attended by the Indian President and other dignitaries, including the chiefs of all the armed forces.

The show included bone chilling air acrobatics, mid-air dog fights, supersonic aircrafts shelling targets, Air Force helicopters dropping tanks, and so on … all to the accompaniment of a 65-piece orchestra whose music filled the air with emotion, in recognition of the brave soldiers who fight for the country.

The view from the mixer bridge may have been somewhat different than from the air traffic control tower, but for Yogesh Dhawan and sound engineer Lokesh Dhawan, this show represented the first time that all 64 inputs on their Soundcraft Si3 had been deployed, with mic feeds from the orchestra as well as the live commentators, who guided the audience through the proceedings.

Building up production in such a remote location brings its own problems. Pokhran is around 50 km from the nearest city and 60km from the Pakistan border (it was the test site for India's first underground nuclear weapon detonation). Being a desert area there is scarcity of water, mobiles rarely work, newspapers don’t reach the area and neither does television.

Vayu Shakti, which means ‘air power,’ was designed to provide a demonstration of the Indian Air Force’s latest warfare technology, with the show running through the daytime and after dark.

All of which provided an exacting task for the Si3 (and its audio pilot). Lokesh Dhawan had to mic seven commentators (each a specialist in the different fighter aircrafts), with two mics for the VIP podium and one for the officer who provided a target briefing to the president — all assigned to Bank A of the desk.

The input division of the 65-piece symphony orchestra of the Indian Air Force, consisting of brass, jazz and Indian instruments, was also assigned to Bank A, with Bank B containing the rhythm section, Bank C all the wind instruments, and Bank D the strings, which used a further eight mics.

The next four inputs were from line devices (laptop and a CD player) while the other two line inputs were connected to the wireless receivers which took the commands of the aerobatic team commanders, for broadcast to the public. The final four inputs were for the Lexicon reverbs, which were used on the band.

As for outputs, feeds were sent to the L/C/R line array, with eight aux for the band monitors and two for side fills. From the output matrix the video set-up received four feeds, there was a 9-camera production unit, which recorded the entire event and fed the live telecast as well as about 50 TV channels and radio.

Two matrix outs were also used by Lokesh to feed the audio break-out boxes for all the electronic media — another matrix out fed a special monitor which had been provided for the Indian President in case she decided to sit in a covered enclosure specially built for her, and the final matrix provided a feed to the ATC, situated a mile away, so that they knew what was going on.

Despite the scale of this event, the ease of programming and configuring the Si3 meant that Lokesh Dhawan was able to set up the entire band in four hours. “We had to do this early in the morning because during the daytime the temperatures were 45°C and it was impossible to work. Once balanced, all I had to do was check once, do a little fine tuning and then save the program.”

“I had absolutely no difficulty of any kind, whereas with an analogue mixer it would have been impossible,” he says.

The show was such a success that Dhawan Electricals has already been put on standby for next year’s event. Says Lokesh: “And this was all because, thanks to the Si3, we managed to deliver!”

Amsterdam’s Famous Melkweg Invests In Soundcraft Vi4

Leading Amsterdam music and arts centre, the Melkweg has purchased a multipurpose Soundcraft Vi4™ from Dutch distributors Audio XL. The technology company’s live sound manager, Jeroen van Keeken, confirms that the decision to purchase the Soundcraft platform for use in the venue’s 700-person capacity Oude Zaal (Old Room) was taken by head technician Richard Balk following extensive evaluation.

Van Keeken explains, “The Melkweg caters for many disciplines, including music, theatre, dance, cinema — and other media. So they needed a versatile desk.”

He adds that the investment forms the latest phase in an extensive upgrade of the venue, which will see an increase in capacity. “Richard and his team of house engineers looked at all the leading consoles, and visited other venues. But in many cases these desks were too complicated,” he says.

Richard Balk was already familiar with the Soundcraft digital topology. The Melkweg’s head of sound liked the intuitive Vistonics™ II interface — providing a fast-track learning curve for uninitiated engineers — as well as the 48-channel input capacity (on 24 faders). This provides the ideal footprint for the limited space of the second room, without the need for external outboard racks. Finally, he was impressed with the library of Lexicon effects and BSS EQ’s.

Richard Balk added that the selection of the Vi4 not only unanimously met the approval of the house technicians but also guest engineers, who have been delighted to work on the surface. The overall sound quality and the support he knows he will receive from van Keeken’s team at Audio XL clinched the deal.

In preparation for a further technical upgrade to their increased 1,500-person capacity main room (‘The Max’) Balk has also asked for CAT5 cables to be laid so that once the next phase is complete, they can patch between the two rooms.

Van Keeken says that the DSP expansion card on the Vi4 will give the venue access up to 72 channels via the outputs on the local rack. “Another nice touch,” he says, “is because Dutch sound engineers are so tall we are having special brackets made to elevate the desk, which will travel up and down over a distance of 20cm. This will ensure that their hands will always be at the right angle to the desk for maximum comfort.”

JBL Professional Releases Next-Generation Line Array Calculator for VERTEC®

At Prolight & Sound 2010, JBL Professional is introducing its Line Array Calculator II software. Line Array Calculator II is a stand-alone application with a broad range of significant enhancements for users of JBL’s various line array system models.

The new Line Array Calculator II duplicates previous LAC functionality with a similar look and feel, but is now a more refined work tool that enables system designers and setup technicians to simulate mixed-model VERTEC® arrays. This includes the entire range of system options, from the fullsize VT4889 line array element and companion VT4880 arrayable subwoofer, through midsize and compact models, to JBL’s newest additions to the VERTEC family, the VT4886 and VT4883 subcompact models.

Enhanced acoustical modeling with colorized graphical representation of results includes SPL mapping, 0 dB Isobar, and SPL attenuation modes. Frequency response and SPL based on the tonal balance of JBL’s world-standard V4 DSP presets can be selected or, alternatively, maximum SPL compatible with EASE modeling predictions can be examined. AudioMaster Provides Slovakian Kino Centrum With JBL Cinema Solution

The state-owned Kino Centrum, in the large Slovakian town of Michalovce, has recently undergone a major refurbishment. Following the foyer came the technical control areas and main screening room--which now features a JBL cinema system, driven by Crown mission-specific cinema amplifiers.

The City’s Department of Culture brought in JBL distributor AudioMaster sro, which represents all Harman Pro brands in the Slovak and Czech Republics.

Having removed the old system, AudioMaster specified a conventional L/C/R set up behind the screen, using JBL’s ScreenArray® series cinema loudspeakers. This comprised three 3722N enclosures complemented by 4645C 18-inch high-power subwoofers, mounted close to the floor.

Providing the balcony area surround sound are quantities of 2-way JBL 8320 cinema surround speakers, with JBL 8100 Series ceiling speakers for under-balcony and top of balcony infill, supported by further surface-mount JBL Control 28’s, positioned left and right at the top of the balcony.

In the equipment rack the cinema specialists then specified five Crown DSi 1000 cinema amps and an XLS202D—as well as a Dolby CP650 processor.

Two of the DSi 1000’s are used for the screen channels, a further DSi 1000 is run in bridge mode for the Low Frequency Effects (LFE) channel, while others are assigned to various left, right and rear channels of the JBL 8320’s and Control 28’s. The XLS202D powers the JBL 8100 back channels (under- and top-balcony) and finally a Crown DSi-8M handles the projection room monitoring.

AudioMaster has built a reputation for installing cinema systems, from single-screen one-offs to complete multiplex chain rollouts; here the company worked closely alongside KVEL v.o.s., which installed and commissioned the 35mm Meopta Meo5XB projectors.

The conversion at Michalovce is not to full digital but an upgrade to stereo analog, with a Dolby digital head. As a result, it now supports Dolby SR, Dolby Digital and also Dolby Digital Surround EX formats.

Said AudioMaster’s project manager, Michal Smolárik, “Aside from JBL’s dedicated ScreenArray system, using the 8100 Series and Crown XLS202 provided an economic solution, because in the original installation no provision had been made for sound at balcony and under balcony level. This has made a vast improvement and the client is delighted.”

What started with a mixing board in his bedroom and some microphones in the living room has progressively grown into a spacious, acoustically correct recording studio that rivals even the most noteworthy world-class recording facilities.

After being nominated for a GRAMMY for his work with Jack Wilkins in 2002, Winer began hosting Jazz and rock artists at his studio in Ossining, New York. Today, he sees a wide variety of musical styles; from indie-rockers to hip-hop artists. Winer has worked with some of the most popular artists in the industry, including Rob Thomas, Tony Levin, Mike Stern, Art Garfunkel, Björk, Joe Lynn Turner, and more. Regardless of the musical style, he says that the he can turn to the Perception 820 Tube for all of his recording needs.

“After I first got the microphone, I hooked it up alongside of some much more expensive mics and recorded some male vocals through each mic to test them out,” Winer explained. “We compared the various microphones and the Perception 820 Tube was the clear winner every time.”

New Soundcraft V3.0 Software Adds Even More Power To Si Series

Soundcraft is introducing its new V3.0 software for its Si Series consoles, offering increased DSP channels, I/O patching and improved layering of the control surface faders.

Not only does the new upgrade support I/O patching of inputs and outputs, but more DSP channels have been realised increasing the mix capacity of the Soundcraft Si1 from 48 to 72, and the Soundcraft Si2 from 64 to 80. These mix channels come from the pool of I/O formed by the local inputs, FX Returns and the option card slot.

The patching facility provides a simple way to freely route not only inputs from physical connectors to DSP channels, but also to assign the channel direct outputs and buses as desired to the MADI outputs (for example a second Si Series console to create a FOH and Monitor pair) or to a MADI-based recording system.

The unique ‘Auto Complete’ feature allows ‘one-touch’ patching of multiple I/O points to channels or buses to save valuable time and avoid mistakes when requiring to re-patch lots of inputs or outputs for example, when switching all input sources to the MADI card for a virtual sound check.

The optional MADI card can also be used to integrate any Si Series console with a Soundcraft Vi Series console, connecting directly into a Vi Series stagebox so the two consoles can share stage inputs.

Further increasing the power of the Soundcraft Si1 are the optional expansion cards; these are available as either 16 additional mic inputs or eight mic inputs and eight line outputs. Needless to say, these additional inputs and outputs contribute to the available pool of I/O for mixing.

To complement the patching and DSP increase, fader layers have been updated to improve the workflow and allow full ‘multi-user operation’ on an Si3 as both the left and right sides of the console can now access the same channels at the same time.

JBL Professional Releases CBT System Design Software

At Prolight & Sound 2010, JBL Professional is introducing its Constant Beamwidth Technology (CBT) Calculator 1.00 software. The CBT Calculator shows the vertical coverage of JBL CBT line array column loudspeakers by means of an on-screen, cross-sectional sound level coverage display at user-selectable frequencies.

The CBT Calculator allows the use of either one or two JBL Professional CBT loudspeakers, while virtually adjusting their various settings for vertical coverage (narrow or broad) and voicing (speech or music/flat) in a space with up to four independent listening planes. The software also shows frequency response for up to six listener locations as well as an SPL summary of each location over user-defined frequency bands.

With this new software, system designers will be able to determine the best CBT model, the proper vertical coverage and voicing settings, mounting height and down angle, enabling accurate design of the CBT column line array speakers into virtually any application.
